precaution

1.  If it need to administer any medication to the patient that is inhaled via the airway, such as an aerosol spray, it is best to remove the HME from the respiratory loop. Avoid adsorption of medications onto the HME.
2. It is not recommended that the HME be used for more than 48 hours and needs to be replaced immediately if it is found to be contaminated with any form of liquid
3. In addition, HME should also be used with caution in the following situations and active heating and humidification devices should be considered instead.
- Patients with thick or copious secretions.
- Loss in expired tidal volume.
- Hypothermic patients (<32°C).
